Records are broken everywhere in the game of cricket almost every day and the ongoing Big Bash League 2022/23 (BBL) in Australia is witnessing too many records being broken in a single edition. While most of the time the records are about batters scoring the highest individual score, team’s score and highest partnership, on December 16, Friday, Sydney Thunders created history by registering the lowest-ever total in T20 cricket.
To add more, Adelaide Strikers locked horns with the Thunders on Friday and it turned out to be a low-scoring game for the former. However, for Jason Sangha and his men, it turned out to be a nightmare outing as they were bowled out for just 15 runs, chasing a target of 140. As far as the Strikers’ innings is concerned, the likes of Chris Lynn and the New Zealand star Colin de Grandhomme reduced the team from the labyrinth with their 36 and 33 respectively to take the Strikers to 139.
Sydney Thunders hold unwanted record to their name
To comment on the Thunders’ innings, the openers Alex Hales and Matthew Gilkes made their way back to the dressing room after failing to open their accounts. Skipper Sangha, Gurinder Sandhu and Chris Green joined the likes of Hales and Gilkes as they perished for a duck as well, putting the Thunders in deep trouble.
On the back of a thundering five-for from Henry Thornton and a four-for from Wes Agar, the Thunders registered the lowest-ever total in the history of T20s and BBL. Fans, on the other hand, who witnessed the scenes, were left baffled as they took time to digest the fact that it actually happened.
“Have no clue what’s going on, it’s amazing. We thought they bowled really, really well considering what the wicket was doing, but we hung in there long enough. Haven’t seen anything similar to this ever, unbelievable stuff to be honest. We just thought that if we could bowl on top of the stumps, we were clear on what we have to execute. I think we got a lot of nick-offs and Short took one of the best catches at first slip. Really happy for Wes Agar, he bowled really well,” Thornton was quoted as saying about the win post the conclusion of the match.
