During the 2023 US Open final on Sunday, Novak Djokovic defeated Daniil Medvedev to become the first person to ever win 24 Grand Slam titles. Two years after losing to Medvedev in straight sets in their championship match at Flushing Meadows, Djokovic flipped the tables on the Russian to win his fourth US Open crown.
The Serb prevailed 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3 by taking an early break, easily winning the first set, and persevering through a difficult second set that lasted 104 minutes. Fans had expected an even tougher fight from Daniil Medvedev but Novak Djokovic’s passion and determination was no match for the Russian.
The 36-year-old is now the oldest-ever US Open men’s singles winner in history thanks to his victory. The 24-time Grand Slam winner, who previously held the record for the greatest number of Grand Slam singles championships among men, overtook Serena Williams and pulled even with Margaret Court in first place in the all-time standings. In addition, he increased his advantage over Roger Federer (20) and Rafael Nadal (22 Major Championships).
Djokovic reaches even greater heights after US Open 2023 victory
After winning the 2023 US Open, Novak Djokovic is going to take back the top spot from Carlos Alcaraz on Monday. After defeating Alexandre Muller in the opening round of this tournament, the Serb ensured his ascent to the top of the ATP rankings.
The 24-time Grand Slam winner clinched the top spot in the world rankings with 11,795 points after adding 2,000 ranking points to his total. Alcaraz, whose attempt to defend his championship was unsuccessful during the semifinals, will now occupy the second position with 8,535 points. With 7,280 points, Daniil Medvedev will maintain his position as the third-ranked player in the world.
Many tennis fans said that the 36-year-old Serb’s victory had put a conclusion to the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) discussion when they witnessed the Serb earn his 24th Grand Slam trophy.
Fans react as Novak Djokovic beats Daniil Medvedev in straight sets to win US Open 2023: –
Novak Djokovic winning the US Open is poetic justice.
Despite being barred from entering the US for two years and being declared public enemy number one, he stayed true to himself and did not surrender.
He now holds his hands in the air in victory.

Credit to him for the win, it was a great final, specially set 2. But stop spreading misinformation about the travel ban, it was never about him alone.
