WATCH: Throwback when commentators called Carlos Alcaraz ‘Virat Kohli of Tennis’ during French Open

Carlos Alcaraz of Spain defeated Novak Djokovic 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in a gripping Wimbledon 2023 final on Centre Court that lasted four hours, 43 minutes. The World No. 1’s victory also put a stop to Djokovic’s amazing 34-game winning streak at Wimbledon. 

Sachin Tendulkar, the Indian batting maestro also used his official Twitter account to congratulate Alcaraz on his outstanding victory and wrote: “What a fantastic final to watch! Excellent tennis by both these athletes. We’re witnessing the rise of the next superstar of tennis. I’ll be following Carlos’ career for the next 10-12 years just like I did with @Rogerfederer. Many congratulations @carlosalcaraz! #Wimbledon.”

Since Alcaraz’s Wimbledon glory, has been surfacing and doing rounds on social media. When praising Carlos Alcaraz’s performance in a tennis match, a commentator referred to Indian cricketer Virat Kohli when discussing Kohli’s prominence. During the tennis match, the commentator is seen in a viral video identifying Kohli by name.

On Sunday, July 16, Wimbledon’s men’s single’s final featured a duel between Novak Djokovic and Alcaraz. The Serbian had a solid start, winning the opening set and putting an early end to the Spanaird’s challenge.

Alcaraz, on the other hand, remained focused and rallied to win the second set through a tie-break before claiming the third set to take the match’s lead. Djokovic had to fight back hard and did so as the four-time defending champion took the fourth set in order to force the final set. In a tight contest, Alcaraz just edged Novak in a riveting game that the fans won’t forget easily. Nobody would have given any shot for the youngster to win against the Serbian after losing the first set but the ability of the prodigy brought him his first ever Wimbledon title.

Alcaraz is currently only the first guy in the Open Era to have won multiple Grand Slam championships before turning 21 after winning the US Open this past year as well. He is additionally the fourth current male player, after Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, and Djokovic, to win Wimbledon.
