The 20-20 World Cup started off with a bang as minnows Namibia thumped the 2022 Asia Cup winners, Sri Lanka, by a massive 55 runs. The game threw the qualification wide open as others saw it as a chance to go through at the expense of Sri Lanka.
What followed was a similar situation in Group B after West Indies were given a shock by Scotland. As things stand, none of the teams has cemented their position in the Super 12 despite only one game left for each to play.
Each team still stands a mathematical chance of going into the Super Four. Let’s look at the chances of these teams qualifying for the Super 12 stage of the 20-20 World Cup.
Netherlands: Medium
The Netherlands have won both of their games so far. They sit at the top with four points in Group A. They however still have not qualified for the Super 12, as the other two teams have a chance of getting four points as well. The Netherlands would have to win their next match against Sri Lanka in order to qualify for the next stage. An abandoned match would also see them through as Sri Lanka could only get a maximum of three points.
Namibia: High
Namibia brought the shock of the tournament in the very first match after they defeated Sri Lanka by 55 runs. They however lost their second match against the Netherlands and sit second with two points as a result of that.
For qualification, they would have to win their next match against UAE and make sure their run rate is higher than Sri Lanka’s. They would also go through if Sri Lanka lose their match.
Sri Lanka: Medium+
Sri Lanka sit in third with two points. For them to go through, they would need to win their next match against the Netherlands. Their NRR is already better than the Netherlands, and a win would take their points total to four (same as the Netherlands).
UAE: Very very low
UAE’s qualification route is the most daunting. For them to qualify, they would have to come up with a record-breaking win over Namibia; a win so big that it takes their NRR above Sri Lanka as well as Namibia. In addition to that, Sri Lanka would also have to lose their next match against the Netherlands for UAE to qualify.
Scotland: Medium +
Scotland sit at top of the Group B table with two points and an NRR of +0.759. For Scotland to qualify, they would have to win their next match against Zimbabwe. They can also go through if their next match is abandoned.
Zimbabwe: Medium+
Zimbabwe are second with 2 points in two matches. They would have to win their next match against Scotland to go through to Super Four. They however do not have the same luxury of going through after a washout, as Scotland would have a better run rate and the winning team from West Indies and Ireland would have more points (4). If however both the Group B matches are abandoned due to rain, then Zimbabwe would go through on the back of a better run rate (0.00) than two of the bottom teams.
West Indies: Medium
West Indies are third in the group after having lost their first match and winning the second. For them to go through, they will have to win their next match against Ireland. There is no other way for them to qualify.
Ireland: Medium
Ireland are in a similar boat as West Indies. They are fourth with 2 points in two matches. For them to qualify, they will have to win their next match against Zimbabwe. No other outcome can pull them to the Super 12.
