Brave all-arounder Andre Russell has rejoined the West Indies T20I team for their five-match series versus England, which gets underway in Barbados on December 12. The Caribbeans seek to solidify their preparations towards the T20 World Cup in June, and the only uncapped member in their 15-man team is 21-year-old Matthew Forde.
Russell last competed for his country in the T20 World Cup of 2021. He has been playing for the Deccan Gladiators during the Abu Dhabi T10 League in the United Arab Emirates in recent months. Tuesday’s opening Twenty20 International will see the seam-bowling all-round player join the team.
For the first occasion since 2020, three key players returned back to the format after withdrawing from ODIs. These players include , Sherfane Rutherford, Jason Holder, and Nicholas Pooran. Shai Hope is all set to play the role of vice captain. Before the last two games, the selection panel gets the chance to review their roster.
“We will continue to assess in the lead up to the competition” : Desmond Haynes
Chief selector Desmond Haynes stated his optimism about the team’s performance and his faith in the group that was chosen. He said, according to an ESPN Cricinfo quote.
He said, “This will be the final home T20I series for the West Indies in 2023, as they prepare to be one of the two host teams for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA in June 2024. We have selected a squad that we think gives us the best chance of success in that tournament. We will continue to assess in the lead up to the competition.”
