With Daryl Mitchell, Phillips scored 49 runs over the sixth wicket. After that, he and Kyle Jamieson teamed together to put together a 55-run partnership for the ninth wicket.

Shoriful Islam claimed Phillips’ wicket just as he was about to get a well-earned first Test hundred. However, he made sure that the Kiwis had an eight-run advantage at the conclusion of the first innings. Tim Southee who scored an invaluable 14 before being the final person to be dismissed in the first innings.
