Veteran actor Suniel Shetty expresses concern over recent surge in tomato prices

Suniel Shetty

The price of tomatoes, an essential ingredient in Indian cooking, has risen recently, breaking all previous records for inflation. The nation is experiencing a major tomato shortage, which has caused prices to increase by more than 400% in recent weeks. The scarcity is attributed to unseasonably high rainfall in recent months that has affected the crops’ growth as well as the unpredictable weather that has destroyed this year’s tomato agriculture.

Currently, the price of tomatoes in the Indian retail market range between Rs 120 and Rs 150 per kg. This has not only affected ordinary people but even celebrities, with Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty voicing his concern with the price hike. The veteran actor said that the recent spike in tomato prices has affected his family and it is a misconception that superstars are not affected by such things.

“My wife Mana and I follow a principle of purchasing vegetables for only a day or two, emphasizing the importance of consuming fresh produce. However, the recent surge in tomato prices has also affected our kitchen. Consequently, I find myself consuming fewer tomatoes these days. It’s a misconception that being a superstar shields me from such matters. In reality, we also have to face and manage these challenges,” the 61-year-old said.

Forced to compromise on flavour due to rising costs: Suniel Shetty

Shetty, who is also an entrepreneur, said he usually orders vegetables from an app mainly because it provides fresh items. However, he added that due to the increased cost of tomatoes, his family, like others, has been forced to compromise on tastes and flavours.

“Upon examining the prices listed on these applications, you’ll be amazed. They are more cost-effective compared to physical stores or markets. I use the app for ordering not just because of affordability but primarily because they offer fresh produce. As a restaurateur myself, I have always negotiated for the best prices. Unfortunately, due to the rising costs of tomatoes, people have been forced to compromise on flavour and quality. Regrettably, I find myself in the same situation,” the actor added.
