Travis Basevi, creator of StatsGuru, tragically passes away of Brain cancer

The news has come as a shock to many cricket fans.

Travis Basevi

Travis Basevi, the programmer who created Statsguru has been announced to have lost a long-standing fight with Brain cancer.

Announcing the news of his departure, Sambit Bal, ESPN Cricinfo’s editor in chief wrote, “Terrible morning. Travis Basevi, one of Cricinfo’s early champions, programming genius, and creator of StatsGuru is gone. Remember him every time you look up a stat. We will remember him for so much more.”

Travis Basevi cofounded Cricinfo with Vishal Misra and others in 1993. Since then it has become one of the biggest sources of cricket news and stats for fans all around the world. Basevi created the Test and ODI scorecards database for CricInfo. His biggest achievement however was creating StatsGuru, a database containing statistics on players, and officials, information about cricket boards, and teams, details of future tournaments, individual teams and records.

It is with incredible sadness I write these words: Travis Basevi- the creator of Statsguru and my partner in crime for ESPNcricinfo has left us. He was my closest friend and was (by far) the funnier half of <travisal>. He leaves behind his wife and son. F**k cancer, “wrote Vishal Misra, the cofounder of Cricinfo.

Shedding more light on Basevi, Misra wrote, “We together created the test and ODI scorecards database for CricInfo, and he single-handedly created the powerhouse that Statsguru is. He later went to Wisden, came back to CricInfo and then was the CTO or Cricviz before the disease stuck.”

Misra said that every cricket fan in the world owes a debt of gratitude to Travis and hoped that he would be happy wherever he is right now.

“Every cricket fan in the world owes a debt of gratitude to Travis – CricInfo wouldn’t exist without him but he always shied away from the limelight. Be well mate – wherever you are tonight – am sure you are chugging away pint after pint as you always did,” said Misra in his last tweet.
