‘They have become superstars…’ – Former Indian bowler lambasts Indian players post 20-20 World Cup exit

‘We haven’t won one World Cricket Body tournament in 9 years,’ Wassan added.

Former Indian bowler lambasts Indian players post 20-20 World Cup exit

India is probably one of the big names when it comes to international cricket and the curse is that they have not won a major multinational tournament since 2013. The Men in Blue faced off against England in the knockout game of the ongoing 20-20 World Cup 2022 on November 10, Thursday and the Three Lions thrashed Rohit Sharma’s men by chasing the target of 169 without losing a wicket.

Former Indian cricketer Atul Wassan, who was frustrated by the loss, said that the Indian players are worshipped and they become superstars just by winning bilateral series. Further, Wassan said that it was because of the media and the fans, that the players hold no accountability when losing a major tournament.

“The threshold for satisfaction has gotten really low. Despite losing, these players will be superstars. They’ve been rewarded a lot more for a lot less, facile wins. On Indian T20 League wins, they have become superstars. If a player performs well in a bilateral series, he is given four contracts. They think that even if they lose the World Cup, nothing is lost. Life goes on,” Wassan said on ABP news.

Trophy cabinet is empty after all: Atul Wassan

The 54-year-old added that the players who play for India are filthy rich and said that they do not have trophies under their belt. Commenting on India lacking a major trophy for the past 9 years, the former Indian bowler said that the fans must think before heaping too much praise on the basis of bilateral wins.

“All this fame that surrounds an Indian cricketer should be categorised. You need to understand that a lot of this is due to fans and the media. That we praise them so much for trivial achievements in bilateral series, players feel they have achieved everything. We haven’t won one World Cricket Body tournament in 9 years. If you pick the top 15 cricket stars in the world, 10 will be Indians – be it in terms of endorsements, name or fame – but without anything. The trophy cabinet is empty at the end of the day,” Wassan said further.
