Jumping onto the bandwagon of experimentation with cricket, Cricket West Indies and The Caribbean Premier League are jointly going to introduce ‘The 6ixty’. The tournament is scheduled to be played in St. Kitts and Nevis in its inaugural edition which is starting on 24th August 2022 in the lead-up to the CPL.
The tournament will be having both men’s and women’s editions held simultaneously. West Indies legend Chris Gayle has been named the Brand Ambassador for the tournament, with the trophy (the “Universe Boss Trophy”) also named after him.
The success of several T10 competitions that were organized around the West Indies led to the birth of the ‘6ixty’. The tournament is also expected to grow the women’s game by building on the foundations established by the women’s T10 exhibition matches which were played just before the 2019 CPL playoffs. The inaugural edition will see six teams fighting for the coveted title.
Rules of ‘The 6ixty’
- The batting team will have only six wickets instead of 10 in the match.
- The batting team can have a window to unlock the third powerplay over after smashing two sixes in the two-over powerplay.
- Both teams will have to bowl five continuous overs from each end instead of switching ends after each over.
- The penalty will be imposed on the team in the game for slow over-rate. If any of the two teams can’t bowl the overs in the allotted time then a fielder will be sent outside for the final six balls.
- Fans will be able to vote to decide the timing of a “Mystery Free Hit” in each innings. (This will be a delivery on which the batters can’t be dismissed).
