Reserve Day to be introduced for Playoff matches in TNPL 2023

The seventh season of the Tamil Nadu Premier League will get underway in Coimbatore on June 12.

Major rule changes in TNPL 2023

In the 2022 season of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), Chepauk Super Gillies and Lyca Kovai Kings shared the title since the Coimbatore final was rained off. The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association has opted to add reserve days for all four playoff games starting this season to combat any potential rain danger in the future. On June 12, the seventh season of the Tamil Nadu Premier League gets underway in Coimbatore.

Salem will host the first qualifying round (July 7) and the elimination round (July 8). The final is on July 12, and Qualifier 2 will be held in Tirunelveli on July 10.

Decision Review System (DRS) and Impact Player rule to feature for the first time in TNPL

According to Dr. RN Baba, assistant secretary of the TNCA, the Decision Review System (DRS) will also be made available for the first time in the league, but teams cannot use DRS for wide or no-ball calls. The impact player rule has also been updated for this season.

Shahrukh Khan, the captain of the Lyca Kovai Kings and a player for the Punjab Kings attended the event and expressed his support for the usage of technology in umpire decisions. He also praised the TNPL for offering a platform for discovering potential.

‘’TNPL is a tournament that is played with the same intensity as IPL. T Natarajan first demonstrated this with his excellent yorker-bowling skills. And we all saw how Sai Sudharsan (who first came into the limelight thanks to TNPL) batted in the IPL final. Then there are also players like Varun Chakravarthy, who shone for KKR, and Sonu Yadav,” said Shahrukh. Four locations in the state—Tirunelveli, Salem, Dindigul, and Coimbatore—will host games in the TNPL.

After observing the success of the Impact Player concept in the IPL 2023, the TNPL will also use it this season. The TNPL matches will undoubtedly become more exciting thanks to this new rule. Because the venue would be under construction, Chennai fans won’t be able to witness the game at their home stadium, MA Chidambaram Stadium.
