In the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 final, former Australia skipper Steve Smith made a blunder as he failed to take a review. Chasing 241, the Aussies have had a mixed start. After the first couple of overs, the India bowlers made a comeback with the wickets of David Warner and Mitchell Marsh, taken by Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah respectively. In the seventh over, Smith was given out lbw.

The former Australia skipper decided not to take a review. However, as suggested by the replays and the Hawkeye, the impact was outside the off-stump. As per the rules, if a batter tries to offer a shot and gets hit on the pads outside off-stump, they can’t be given out. On the other hand, if a batter leaves the ball and gets hit on the pads even outside the off-stump, they can be given out.

Meanwhile, with this, Smith had a rare failure in the World Event knockout matches. In the semifinal match against South Africa, the right-hander played an incredible innings to take his team home.

Talking about the match, the Yellow Brigade won the toss and bowled first, which surprised the fans. The home team had a great start with skipper Rohit Sharma hitting 47 off 31 balls. However, the team lost three wickets for 81 runs. This led to the Indian batters taking precautions. Even though the likes of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul put together 68 runs and scored individual fifties, they didn’t convert their starts.

In the end, thanks to lower-order contributions, the team reached 240 all-out. With the ball, despite being wayward for a bit, they managed to take three wickets for 47 runs. At the time of writing, the likes of Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne have put together 74 runs for the fourth wicket. India is in desperate need of wickets in order to win the match.
