The Kochi Grand Hyatt on Bolgatty Island is about to host the Indian T20 League 2023 auction. Only 405 of the 991 players who registered for the auction have been selected, and they will be sold in the 7-hour auction that will take place later in the day.

For the circumstance where two franchises are tied on a bid for a player, the Indian Cricket Board has reintroduced a significant modification known as the “tie-breaker rule”. The tie-breaker rule will be used if there is a tie for any player between two franchises and when a franchise makes a bid for a player but is unable to increase that bid.

The Board will request written bids from each of the teams who tied for that bid. The tied teams will receive a form, and the franchise’s bid will be kept secret. The tie-breaker will be decided by the highest bidder who participated in the “silent bidding” process. The money from that specific tiebreaker bid will go directly to the Indian Cricket Board instead of being subtracted from the salary cap.

“The Tiebreak Bid will indicate the amount, payable in one instalment that the franchisee is prepared to pay to BCCI. The amount of the Tiebreak Bid is separate from and in addition to the amount of the Last Bid. The Tiebreak Bid is the separate amount, which the Franchisee is prepared to pay to BCCI and is not deducted from the relevant Franchisee’s Salary Cap. There is no limit on the amount of the Tiebreak Bid,” the Indian Cricket Board informed the franchises.

Indian T20 League: Accelerated auction

The 2023 auction will end with an accelerated auction because there are 405 players scheduled to go up for bid but only 87 slots available, 30 of which are set aside for foreign players. Hugh Edmeads, the auctioneer, will read out each of the first 86 names, which have been divided into 13 sets, one at a time.

The accelerated auction will then start, depending on the size of the remaining purse and the number of open slots. Every franchise will be asked to list 10 players, and only those players’ names, along with the unsold players from the first 87 players, will be read out during the accelerated auction.
