Gujarat and Rajasthan fought for the Indian T20 League 2022 title at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The Pink Brigade won the toss and chose to bat first, and started brilliantly. The team had two contrasting fortunes during their innings. They had a good start after scoring 59/1 in eight overs with Yashasvi Jaiswal scoring quickly, while Jos Buttler and skipper Sanju Samson played steadily.
However, the wicket of Samson in the ninth over changed the complexion of the innings. From 60/1, the team finished 130/9 at the end of their innings. Buttler, who has been the highest run-getter ahead of the game with 824 runs, took his tally to 863 and became the second overseas player after David Warner to finish with more than 800 runs. Warner finished with 848 runs in 2016 playing for Hyderabad. Coming back to the game, Gujarat’s skipper Hardik Pandya picked three wickets, Sai Kishore took two while Rashid Khan, Mohammed Shami, and Yash Dayal picked one each.
In reply, the Indian T20 League debutants had a poor start as they lost two wickets for 23. They lost the wicket of Wriddhiman Saha and Matthew Wade respectively. It looked like the game will go down to the wire. Also, the 2008-winners weren’t in a mood to give away the runs easily. They could have had Shubman Gill two times during the game. Their first chance was when Yuzvendra Chahal dropped Gill’s chance in the powerplay. Another chance was when Shimron Hetmyer couldn’t grab the difficult chance off Chahal.
Gill went on to score an unbeaten 45 off 43 balls. Skipper Pandya did well with the bat as well by scoring 34 off 30 balls. This knock took the team close before he got out to an absolute peach of a delivery from Chahal. David Miller came in and finished the game in 18.1 overs with an unbeaten 32 off 19 balls. The team won the game by seven wickets and 11 balls to spare. Thus, it was a memorable title-winning campaign for the Gujarat-based franchise.
