Spain’s coach Luis Enrique opened on his favourites to win the FIFA World Cup 2022 to be played in Qatar if at all La Roja fail to make it to the summit clash and clinch the title. For the unversed, Spain are bracing to kick off their World Cup campaign against Costa America on November 23, Wednesday.
Argentina will play their campaign opener against Saudia Arabia, a day before Spain make their first appearance in the tournament. Lionel Messi, who earlier announced that it might be his last World Cup, might as well give his all to clinch the cup for his team and the country.
Enrique, who said that Argentina should win the multinational tournament if Spain fail to, added that it would be unfair for a player like Messi to retire without a World Cup under his belt. Argentina are grouped alongside Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Poland in the tournament, making it a cakewalk for the team to make it to the next round.
“If Spain don’t win the World Cup, I would like Argentina to win it. It would be unfair for a player like Leo Messi to retire without winning one,” Enrique was quoted as saying. As things stand, it remains to be seen if Messi can walk out with a World Cup trophy to his name.

Can Argentina repeat 1986 magic?
La Albiceleste, under the leadership of Diego Maradona, won the World Cup for the second time in 1986, while they won the cup for the first time in 1978 and the country is yet to win the title post that. They did come closer in 2014 but lost to Germany in the summit clash with a score line of 1-0 and in 2018, La Albieceleste bowed out in the Round of 16 stages.
It remains to be seen if Argentina could repeat the same magic from 1986 and clinch the title for the third time in history. Messi, on the other hand, would hope to make a comeback and turn things around from the previous edition of the multinational tournament.
