‘Highest point of his captaincy’- Former India cricketer singles out Rohit Sharma’s decision against Pakistan as his best

India won their 20-20 World Cup opening match by 4 wickets.

Rohit Sharma

Team India came up with a sensational win over Pakistan in the 20-20 World Cup. Having faced defeat in their last clash, the Men in Blue began with an aggressive approach and bowled with intent in the high-intensity match. The first inning however was also special for Rohit Sharma’s captaincy.

The 35-year-old cricketer used his bowlers in tandem to thwart any challenge from Pakistan batters. Indian pacers Arshdeep Singh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar breathed fire at the top with Mohammad Shami and Hardik Pandya controlling things in the middle. Spinner Axar Patel however did not have a good day as he was smacked for 21 runs in the first over itself.

Sharma however read the match well and took a decision that potentially turned out to be massive for India. The Indian skipper decided to hold back Axar from bowling and use other options. The match was won on the very last bowl and a couple of more runs could have resulted in India’s loss proving again the importance of Kohli’s captaincy.

Former Indian cricketer Madan Lal seemed to be of the same opinion after India’s win and said, “I think Rohit not bowling Axar Patel after his expensive over was the highest point (of his captaincy in the match). He looked toward his more experienced spin bowler in Ashwin. He bowled Ashwin three as too many runs were conceded at that point. I believe it was the highest point of his captaincy today.”

He is a leader inside and outside- Suresh Raina

Former India player Suresh Raina also lauded Rohit Sharma for his string decision following India’s win against Pakistan in the 20-20 World Cup.

“I think he has a lot of respect in the team. The communication he has in the dressing room. He is a leader inside and outside. I always felt he had better communication and players respect him,” said Suresh Raina. India have now flown to Sydney for their second match of the tournament against the Netherlands which is scheduled for October 27th.
