Suresh Raina went unsold in the Indian T20 League mega auction held last month. Raina was released by the Chennai franchise, with which he has been associated since 2008. However, he played for Gujarat Lions in 2016 and 2017 as Chennai was suspended from the league. Apart from this, the Southpaw hasn’t played for any other team in the last 14 years.
Last November, he was released by the four-time winners ahead of the player retentions. Last month, he went unsold on the first day of the auction. Notably, other players got the chance to be picked by 10 teams on the second day except for the 35-year-old. Fans were understandably upset with the development and termed this as the end of his career.
Fans moved on and accepted the fact that the 2011 World Cup winner won’t play for the first time in 14 years. However, ahead of the 15th season, Raina started trending on Twitter all of sudden. With England opener Jason Roy pulling of ITL this week, fans suggested that Suresh Raina can be roped in by Gujarat Lions. Roy was signed by Gujarat last month but decided to pull out due to bio-bubble fatigue.
Roy pulling out of the cash-rich has left the team with only one opener in the form of Matthew Wade to bat with Shubman Gill.
