Manchester City has been charged by the Premier League with numerous alleged financial rule violations. The Premier League has referred the case to an independent commission. Man City has stated that they are “surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches,” adding that they “welcome the review of this matter.”
Manchester City has stated that they are “surprised” to have been charged by the Premier League with numerous alleged financial rule violations. The alleged violations range from the 2009-10 season to the 2017-18 season.
The club is accused of failing to provide “accurate financial information that gives a true and fair view of the club’s financial position” in accordance with league rules. The league says the accurate financial information required related to “revenue (including sponsorship revenue), its related parties and its operating costs”.
The second set of alleged violations relates to alleged violations of rules “requiring a member club to include full details of manager remuneration in its relevant contracts with its manager” from 2009-10 to 2012-13. Between December 2009 and May 2013, the club was managed by current Italy manager Roberto Mancini. The second set of alleged violations also includes requirements for a club to include full details of player remuneration in relevant contracts from 2010-11 to 2015-16.
The third section addresses alleged Premier League rule violations requiring clubs to comply with UEFA financial fair play regulations from 2013-14 to 2017-18. After being suspended by UEFA’s club financial control body (CFCB) in February 2020 for “serious breaches” of club licencing and financial fair play regulations, Man City had a two-year ban from European football overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in 2020.
The fourth set of alleged violations pertains to the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules from 2015-16 to 2017-18. Finally, from December 2018 to the present, the club is accused of violating league rules requiring member clubs to cooperate with and assist the Premier League with its investigations.
