While travelling to Indore, where India will play Afghanistan during the second Twenty20 International on Sunday, Virat Kohli was captured on camera at the Mumbai Airport. After more than a year away, the former captain of India made his T20I comeback. He was unable to play the first T20I match versus Afghanistan in Mohali for personal reasons.
For both captain Rohit Sharma and player Virat Kohli, the T20I series versus Afghanistan is noteworthy. Prior to the Afghanistan series, neither player has participated in a Twenty20 international match after the World Cup in 2022.
Since November 2022, Virat Kohli has not played in the shortest format for Team India. The selectors preferred him to concentrate on the World Test Championship final as well as the ODI World Cup.
However, his absence hasn’t made him any less dominant in the format. He still holds the record for most runs scored in the format worldwide, having amassed over 4,000 runs at an incredible average of 52.73. The former Team India captain achieved this at an epic strike rate of 137.96.
Virat Kohli was also selected for the Test series against England which is all set to begin later this month. He would be looking to pile on more runs in the game’s oldest format and put the opposition under immense pressure.
Which players might come into India’s playing XI in the 2nd T20I?
While Shivam Dube’s brilliant performance in India’s first Twenty20 International victory against Afghanistan was made possible by Yashasvi Jaiswal’s unlucky injury, the real fireworks will continue to come from Virat Kohli’s eagerly awaited comeback in Indore. For rookie starter Shubman Gill, however, who may find himself being left out. With Virat Kohli coming back, this homecoming can mean terrible news for the Gujarat Titans opener.
Shubman Gill’s career may be on hold for the time being, but his brilliance is unmistakable. Jaiswal’s possible comeback further complicates matters, giving Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid an unprecedented selection issue.
