Does win over defending champions England confirm India’s spot in ODI World Cup 2023 semi-finals?

England vs India

Rohit Sharma and Co. secured a big win against England in the ODI World Cup 2023 on October 29 at Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. For the first time since 2003, Team India defeated England in the ODI World Cup. Notably, in 2011, the match between England and India ended in a thrilling tie. In 2019, England defeated India in the group stage. In 2007 and 2015, the two teams did not face each other. However, the win in Lucknow was fantastic for India, as they recently suffered a 10-wicket loss in the semifinal of the 2022 T20 World Cup.

India posted 229 runs on the board on a difficult wicket to bat on in Lucknow. However, during the chase, England managed just 129 runs before getting all out. The Indian bowling unit was all over England. The batsmen of England had no answer to the spells of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Kuldeep Yadav. It pushed England towards yet another huge loss in the tournament.

With just one win in six matches in the tournament, England is in serious trouble in the tournament. The batters are not scoring enough runs for them. They have yet to face Australia and Pakistan in the tournament. Notably, Jos Buttler and Co. will now be looking at securing a spot in the Champions Trophy in 2025 if they finish up in the top seven spots.

India is looking good for a semifinal spot

Apart from the hosts, Pakistan, the seven other teams in the ongoing tournament from the top of the table will automatically qualify for the Champions Trophy 2025 owing to their great position in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. On the other hand, India is looking good for a semifinal spot. The home team is just one step away from securing a spot in the semifinals.

With six wins in their six appearances, India has been the only unbeaten team in the tournament till now. India climbed to the top spot in the tournament following their win against England. Notably, a win is enough for India to set foot in the semifinals of the tournament. Meanwhile, India is yet to play Sri Lanka, South Africa, and the Netherlands.
