India beat England by 100 runs

In the 29th match of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, India beat defending champions England by 100 runs. In a low-scoring game, the Indian pacers stole the show with a quality bowling performance. It came after a fighting batting performance from skipper Rohit Sharma, and Suryakumar Yadav stitched brilliant knocks.

Earlier, in the game, England skipper Jos Buttler won the toss and opted to bowl first. England pacer Chris Woakes and David Willey clinched three quick wickets and pushed India way back into the game. Woakes dismissed openers Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, while Willey clinched an important wicket for Virat Kohli.

However, despite early setbacks, India skipper Rohit Sharma and wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul added 91 runs for the fourth wicket. Rahul, in his innings, scored 39 runs off 58 balls with the help of three fours. After his departure, Suryakumar Yadav joined Rohit in the middle and added 33 runs for the fifth wicket. Rohit, in his innings, scored 87 runs off 101 balls with the help of ten fours and three sixes.

Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav, in his inning, scored 49 runs off 47 balls with the help of four fours and a six. In the end, some quick wickets helped England restrict India from crossing the 250-run mark. The hosts posted a tricky total of 229/9 in 50 overs. For England, pacer David Willey took three wickets, while Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid took two wickets.

Shami and Bumrah dismantled the English batting line-up

Chasing a tricky total in Ekana, England, had a great start. Opener David Malan and Jonny Bairstow added 30 runs for the first wicket in 4.5 overs. However, this was the last time the English team smiled in the game. On the last two deliveries of the fifth over, Jasprit Bumrah dismissed openers David Malan and Joe Root. Root registered his first golden duck in the ODI World Cup.

Soon skipper Rohit made a quick bowling change as he replaced underperforming Mohammed Siraj by Mohammed Shami. The decision favoured the team as Shami clinched two wickets in the span of eight balls. He dismissed Ben Stokes for a six-ball duck and Jonny Bairstow for 14 runs. However, in the middle overs, Liam Livingston and Moeen Ali tried to form a partnership while playing out spinners.

Once again, Rohit’s brilliant captaincy helped India make a comeback. Rohit once again asked Shami to take charge, who, on the very first ball, dismissed Ali and sealed the game for India. Shami, in his spell, clinched four wickets, while Bumrah got three. Meanwhile, spinner Kuldeep Yadav got two and Ravindra Jadeja got one wicket. With this win, India remains unbeaten in the ongoing tournament.
