The South Asian country Sri Lanka is going through massive economic turmoil. Fuel prices and inflation have shot through the roof with people squandering for basic needs. It is often seen that cricket-playing nations come to each other’s aid in these situations and this time is no different.
The Australian team is currently touring Sri Lanka for 10 match series consisting of three T20Is, five ODIs, and two Tests. Their tour is already expected to bring in business worth $2.5 million to the crisis-hit country. Cricket Australia however has gone a little further and come up with a video appeal asking everyone to donate to the South Asian country. In a video shared by Lasith Malinga, the two Australian cricketers Pat Cummins and Steve Smith are seen appealing for helping Sri Lanka in any way they can.
“We are in Sri Lanka raising awareness of the economic crisis and encouraging friends to assist in any way they can. Just as our mate Shane Warne did in 2005 after the tsunami crisis because that is what neighbors do and we have been helping each other out for more than 75 years,” said the duo of ex and current Australian captains.
Steve Smith and Pat Cummins further reiterated, “The united nations has launched a flash appeal in Sri Lanka to support communities affected by the economic crisis. We are proud that Australia is doing its bit, together we can help Sri Lanka hit this crisis for six.”
Sri Lanka and Australia have played two of their three T20Is both of which were won by Australia. The first match was total domination by the team from down under, bowling out Sri Lanka for 128 and achieving the target comfortably without losing any wickets. Josh Hazlewood with 4 wickets and the openers Aaron Finch (61) and David Warner (70). The second game was a tad more competitive wherein Sri Lanka lost by only three wickets. The two teams lock horns in the last T20 on June 11.
