‘Ye kya hogya bhai’ – Fans react as Bangladesh register historic first home Test win against New Zealand

Bangladesh’s first Test victory on home soil came against New Zealand earlier today. Now they are ranked second on the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023–25 points standings. On the fifth day of the Test match, Bangladesh defeated New Zealand by 150 runs at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Bangladesh currently has 12 points and a points percentage of 100 (PCT) in the World Test Championship standings after the historic victory. In the second Test match between Bangladesh and New Zealand, which is scheduled to take place from December 6–10 at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, the latter team will be hoping to score their first points.

In the first Test of the series, Taijul Islam put up a remarkable performance for the hosts. He ended the game with match figures of 11/170, a career high. To shock New Zealand, the 31-year-old left-arm bowler grabbed 4/109 in the initial innings and 6/75 in the second.

Bangladesh chose to bat first during the World Test Championship match after winning the toss. Glenn Phillips took 4/53, thus they were restricted to 310 despite Mahmudul Hasan Joy’s 86. After replying with 317, New Zealand managed to take a narrow lead of seven runs.

Bangladesh scored 338 runs during their second innings thanks to a strong batting display. Najmul Hossain Shanto, the skipper, took the lead with 105, and important contributions came from Mushfiqur Rahim (67) as well as Mehidy Hasan Miraz (50*). Ajaz Patel, a left-arm spinner, secured 4/148 for New Zealand.

Tim Southee, the New Zealand test captain spoke about after the defeat in the first Test to Bangladesh. He spoke about where the side lacked and where they could improve upon.

The New Zealand skipper said, “Credit to Bangladesh. They played well and are a very good side in these conditions. As a bowling group, we needed to sustain pressure. It was a pretty good wicket. Took a bit of spin which you expect in this part of the world. We’ll reflect on this and try to be better in the next game. Everyone’s striving to always improve their game and get better.”
