Debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal, along with skipper Rohit Sharma, hit centuries and added 229 runs for the first wicket.

Starting Day 2 from 80/0, Indian openers toyed with West Indies bowlers in the first session. They were phenomenal in the second session too, as India scored 99 runs in the post-lunch session. India skipper Rohit Sharma hit his 10th Test century as he scored 103 runs off 221 balls with the help of ten boundaries and two sixes. Soon after completing his century, Rohit was dismissed by part-time off-spinner Alick Athanaze.

After his dismissal, Shubman Gill came to bat at number three and failed to capitalise on the opportunity. Gill, in his brief stay, scored 6 runs off 11 balls with the help of a four. However, in the end, Jaiswal, along with Virat Kohli, continued to hammer West Indies bowlers. Both remained unbeaten until stumps to put India on top. Jaiswal, in his innings, scored an unbeaten 143 runs off 350 balls with the help of 14 boundaries. On the other hand, Kohli, in his innings, scored an unbeaten 36 runs off 96 balls with the help of a boundary.

Rohit and Jaiswal register record-breaking partnership

After bundling out the hosts for 150 runs on Day 1, India outplayed them with the bat. Openers Rohit and Yashasvi added 229 runs for the first wicket and became the first opening pair to take India to a first-innings lead in a Test match. This is also India’s first 200+ opening partnership away from home in the last 44 years.

Meanwhile, Jaiswal scored a century on debut, becoming the 17th Indian to do so. He also became the third Indian batter to score a century on debut against West Indies, joining Rohit and Prithvi Shaw on the list. It’s worth noting that Jaiswal is still batting, and he has passed the record for most runs on a Test debut by an Indian opener away from home.
