‘Ye kya baat hui ‘ – Fans react as speculations of IPL 2024 shifting overseas due to Lok Sabha elections surface

The Indian Premier League is among the most decorated as well as famous T20 leagues which are being played across the globe. The 2023 edition of the tournament was a real hit, but the IPL schedule for 2024 may undergo a significant alteration. The Indian Cricket Board (ICB) has a limited time frame to hold the Indian Premier League due to the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, which is set to commence on June 4. However, the Lok Sabha Elections add complications to this situation.

The IPL 2024 is therefore anticipated to begin on March 22 and conclude on May 19. Nevertheless, it’s possible that ICB will have to relocate the matches outside of India because the General Elections in India are scheduled to start in several phases in May. The previous IPL season began on March 31 and concluded on May 29. However, ICB will not only be unable to prolong the window but might also have to shorten it by two or three days due to two significant incidents. The IPL 2023 window spanned 58 days. However, because May 19 is a Sunday and the Apex Cricket Council requires a break of at least two weeks, ICB will need to end the final on that day.

IPL 2024 will be in between three events

IPL’s March–May window is now open according to the Apex Cricket Council. A new window for the IPL cannot, therefore, be scheduled by the ICB. Therefore, the players will shift to the IPL  when the India vs. England Test series concludes on March 11. Furthermore, India will play Sri Lanka prior to the T20 World Cup. Therefore, there won’t be much time. The series like India vs England Test series is set to be played from January 25 to March 11 along with the window for IPL 2024, followed by Lok Sabha Elections: May-June and then T20 World Cup 2024: June 4-30.

Moreover, ICB would face additional scheduling restrictions due to the Lok Sabha Elections in May and June. The Indian Cricket Board (ICB) managed to avoid the General Election dates in 2019 and retained the event in India. Nevertheless, the ICB was forced to move the IPL 2009 and IPL 2014 partially outside of India due to concerns over police protection and security for matches. This time, the Indian board might encounter a similar circumstance.
