In the second game of the doubleheader of SA20 2024 on January 13, the defending champions, Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Durban Super Giants locked horns. While the SEC was looking for the first win after their opening game was washed out, the Super Giants were looking to keep their winning momentum going. Meanwhile, in this game, the visitors, DSG won the toss and elected to bat first.

The visitors had a great start with Quinton de Kock (23) and Matthew Breetzke putting together 58 runs in 5.3 overs. The latter scored 43 off 29 balls including four fours and three sixes. Batting at number three, the former SEC player JJ Smuts from last year hit 75 off 38 balls including four fours and seven sixes. Nicholas Pooran (60*) provided a great finish and helped the team reach 225/3.

In reply, the home team lost their first two wickets in the form of their opening pair, Adam Rossington and Jordan Hermann at the score of 13. At this stage, Tom Abell and Aiden Markram put together 83 runs for the third wicket. However, the Orange Army wasn’t in the chase as the required run rate kept increasing. In the end, the team was restricted to 190/9, losing the game by 35 runs. With this, they avoided the Super Giants getting a bonus point.

Keshav Maharaj, the winning captain: “Little more of a clinical performance today. The batting was phenomenal.. Jon Jon played a role. Nicky did what he does best. It’s just great to see everyone’s putting their hand up. Gleeson got off the flight the other day, but he still executed. The crowd was exceptional. PE is always a special place. It’s about assessing each game as it comes.”
