Indian Premier League (IPL) is the biggest cricket tournament around the globe in terms of revenue generation. In fact, not just in cricket, they have also left behind the likes of the English Premier League, La Liga, Major League Baseball, etc. This league is only behind National Football League (NFL) in the United States. For those who don’t know, IPL now generates 100 crores INR from one game.
In comparison to this, the NFL generates 130-odd crores, the only sporting tournament ahead of cricket’s biggest league. Meanwhile, the Global Players Union has raised concerns over the indifferent payment to the players. They said that the players get only 18 percent of the total revenue. In comparison to the likes of the NFL and Premier League, the numbers are significantly low.
We look forward to seeing IPL and WPL players paid proportionately
The global player union started by praising the Indian Premier League and its revenue generation. FICA added that they would like to see players from Men’s IPL and Women’s Premier League players get paid proportionately.
“Players love playing in the IPL but there’s no doubt that if you look at it comparatively, as a percentage of overall revenue that the league generates, overall player payments are well behind other analogous sporting leagues. We look forward to continuing to see the IPL and WPL be successful and to players being paid fairly and proportionately to their contribution to the success of these and other leagues around the world,” Tom Moffat told Telegraph Sport.
Talking about players such as Ben Stokes, Cameron Green, Sam Curran, Harry Brook, and Nicholas Pooran will get more than 10 crores INR. On the other hand, there are some of the players who will get between 1 crore to 9 crore. Apart from this, some others will get less than 1 crore.
