‘WC se bhi rule out kardo’ – Fans react to Glenn Maxwell being ruled out of South Africa T20Is due to injury

Glenn Maxwell has been replaced in the Australian T20I squad by Matthew Wade after he sustained an ankle injury after the team’s initial training camp in Durban.

With the ODI World Cup in India in mind, Maxwell’s ailment has been described as “a minor aggravation to his left ankle” and a cautious approach has been adopted. He had previously planned to return to the team in India following the T20I series in order to give birth to his first kid.

Australian selector Tony Dodemaide spoke about the approach that they were going to take with Maxwell’s injury. He said, “We are taking a precautionary approach, given Glenn was heading home next week in any case. We will monitor Glenn’s recovery with a view to him being available for the three-match ODI series in India in advance of the World Cup.”

Matthew Wade had hinted at a probable international retirement following the T20 World Cup in Australia last year, but he later backtracked on that, and head of selectors George Bailey said he was still very much on their radar for the event in the West Indies and the USA coming up next year.

He said, “We do fully expect that [Wade] will come back into this T20 squad for that Indian series post the World Cup. This was a great opportunity to give Josh, who’s been on an enormous amount of tours across a number of formats and hasn’t really had much playing-time opportunity.

The former Australian batter spoke about the main wicketkeeper in the team. He said, “Alex Carey is obviously the wicketkeeper in [ODIs], but just making sure that if Josh does get an opportunity through an injury to Alex, that he’s ready to go and he’s got some game time under his belt.

On Wednesday, the T20I series begins in Durban, with all three games taking place there over the course of five days.
