After India’s ODI World Cup 2023 match, Shreyas Iyer stood by his record of hitting the short delivery. He stated that he had “no problem” with the delivery.
Against Sri Lanka, the right-handed batter amassed his best World Cup score of 2023 . He notched up a score of 82 off 56 balls, pushing his team beyond 350. The blow lessened the pressure on his spot, as Suryakumar Yadav performed admirably in Hardik Pandya’s absence due to injury. There were hints that Iyer would be the one to make way for the all-rounder when he returns. Iyer has been criticised heavily for his bouncer style, with many believing that he is a subpar bowler who bowls quickly and in short bursts.
Shreyas Iyer was sent for the post-match press conference by the Indian team management. A journalist questioned him about his ability to play short balls. He replied by saying that, “When you say it’s a problem for me, what do you mean?”. The journalist remarked that, “Not a problem exactly, but it’s troubled you.”
The Indian team batter then gave a wholehearted explanation to this question. He said, “Have you seen how many pull shots I’ve scored especially that have gone for four? If you’re trying to hit a ball, you’re bound to get out anyway, irrespective of if it’s a short ball, if it’s overpitched. If I get bowled two or three times, you all would say, ‘he can’t play an inswinging ball, he can’t play a cut if the ball is seaming’.”

“In my mind I know there’s no problem” : Shreyas Iyer
The Indian Team batter spoke about being from Mumbai and playing at Wankhede helped in facing short deliveries. He said, “Coming from Mumbai, especially from Wankhede where the bounce is pretty much even, here it bounces way more than any other pitches.”
Shreyas Iyer added that, “I’ve played the majority of my games here, so I know how to tackle it. It’s just that when I go to hit some shots you are bound to get out and sometimes it may work, sometimes it may not, and majority of the times it hasn’t worked for me, maybe that’s the reason you think it’s a problem for me, but in my mind I know there’s no problem.”
