The demand for the Women’s Indian T20 League has risen once again. During the Women’s T20 Challenge final on May 27, a set of fans in the stadium started chanting “We want Women’s Indian T20 League”. This isn’t the first time fans have demanded the women’s version of the cash-rich league. When two new teams, Gujarat and Lucknow were added to the Men’s version, fans had demanded the BCCI a Women’s version of the league.

Talking about the women’s version, some of the Men’s Indian T20 League franchises have shown interest in acquiring teams in a Women’s Indian T20 League as well. Currently, the BCCI has been organizing a three-team tournament that isn’t city-based. It will be interesting to see if the BCCI will be able to stage the Women’s T20 League next year or in the future.

The fourth season of the Women’s T20 Challenge was concluded on May 27. The final was played between SN women and VL women. The final was a nail-biter one as SN women won the game by four runs. Batting first, the Blue Brigade scored 165/7, thanks to Deandra Dottin (62) and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (43). Chasing 166, the Purple Brigade were struggling at 64/5.

Laura Wolvaardt scored 65 off 40 balls to take the team home but couldn’t cross the line. With this win, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side won their third title in four seasons, while the Deepti Sharma-led side haven’t won the league till now. It is quite possible that things remain the same as the tournament might be scrapped if the Women’s Indian T20 League introduces.

Talking about the T20 Leagues around the globe, the Big Bash League has been fielding Women’s teams in the last few years. This has reflected in the performance of the Australia Women’s team in the T20I format. They have won five 20-20 World Cups since its introduction in 2009. Thus, a women’s Indian T20 League could not only entertain the fans, but also develop women’s cricket in the nation as well.
