ODI World Cup 2023

‘Waah khud he rest le liya’ – Fans react as Jason Roy opts out of Ireland series following ODI World Cup 2023 snub

Harry Brook has made the England squad for the ODI World Cup 2023 at the expense of Jason Roy

After passing up the opportunity to participate in the Ireland ODI series, England opener Jason Roy has moved one step closer to retirement. Harry Brook made a late comeback for England’s ODI World Cup team after the final squad was announced. Meanwhile, Roy, who is recuperating from an injury, was recently left out.

Roy was instrumental in England’s ODI comeback following their World Cup loss in 2015. He won the team the World Cup in 2019 by being one of the highest run-getters. The powerful opening batsman was already planning to end his ODI career following the 2023 World Cup. However, by choosing not to play in the Ireland series, he may have moved much closer to that goal.

Jason Roy’s choice to be left out was discussed by England selector Luke Wright. The selector said that the batter wasn’t ready to play since he didn’t anticipate being called up for this series.

“He wasn’t expecting to be in that Ireland squad and then to get the news that he was missing out on the World Cup all came as a bit of a hammer blow. We’ve made it apparent to Jason that we won’t judge him differently for that position as the spare batter at the top of the order whether he plays against Ireland or not.”

On Sunday, England substituted Harry Brook for Jason Roy in their roster to start their 50-over World Cup championship defence. Despite a succession of missteps in the most recent series versus New Zealand, Brook, who had been left off of England’s initial World Cup team, was selected.

It feels great to have got the England call: Tom Kohler-Cadmore

Following the cancellation of the first ODI without a ball being played, England made one alteration to their lineup. Tom Kohler-Cadmore returned to the lineup as a result of Joe Root’s intention to take a break before the World Cup.

The Somerset batter said, “It feels great to have got the England call and hopefully if I get the chance I can show them what I can do. Whatever happens, I will enjoy the moment. It’s a special week for me at the end of my first season with Somerset which has seen us win the Vitality Blast. I couldn’t be happier.”
