The Indian team are all set to take on the best teams in the upcoming 20-20 World Cup, starting 16th October 2022. The squad looks pretty strong on paper. India boasts of one of the best batting units and the fans are keen to see how their batters perform in the big-ticket event.
The bowling is a bit of a concern, though. India’s bowling is a big worry due to Bumrah’s ouster from the tournament. Meanwhile, India’s former bowling coaching Bharat Arun has questioned the selectors’ decision to pick as many as three spinners in the squad.
Arun also wanted Umran Malik to be in squad. The former coach believes that the young pacer would have been as asset on bouncy tracks in Australia where the boundaries are also quite big.
“Umran Malik is exciting, he’s got the pace. And given the right kind of fields he’s done pretty well in the IPL. Considering the wickets in Australia I feel India have carried far too many spinners. Somebody like a Umran Malik would have been a great fill-up for the team,” said Arun in a conversation with WC Raman for Sportstar.
India have picked three spinners in the World Cup namely, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Axar Patel. Bharat Arun reckons that India will play only one spinner on most occasions and there was no need to include three in the squad.
“Yes there is bounce, the grounds are big spinners have a very important role in Australia but I think three spinners are too many. Because at any given point you would be playing just one spinner in the team and you have the choice of two spinners in the side. Three spinners is too many. That’s why I said Umran Malik instead of one spinner would have been a very very wise move,” he said.
The Men in Blue will kick start their World Cup campaign against Pakistan on 23rd October 2022.
