More often than not, there are instances where the fielding efforts of players have helped teams to win cricket’s most catches in Asia Cup matches. One such instance was the 1975 World Cup final, where Viv Richards helped West Indies to win the final against Australia with his fielding efforts.   

A very important aspect of fielding is catching the ball. Moreover, the efficiency of a fielding unit can be determined by how well the individuals can catch and stop the ball traveling toward boundary ropes. 5. Suresh Raina

Perhaps one of the best fielders of all-time is Suresh Raina. In the Asia Cup, the Indian fielder showed his athleticism. The star cricketer from India played 13 matches and claimed 8 catches at a rate of 0.615 catches per inning in the history of the Asia Cup. Among the top 5 players on the list, Raina’s ratio of catches per inning is the second-best for a fielder. Moreover, the maximum number of catches Raina claimed in a match was two.   

4. Muttiah Muralitharan

One of the most surprising names on the list is that of Muttiah Muralitharan. Notably, the star bowler from Sri Lanka was not known as a great fielder. The legendary bowler from Sri Lanka represented his team in the Asia Cup in 24 matches. Muralitharan claimed a total of 10 catches in the tournament at a rate of 0.416 catches per inning. Much like Suresh Raina, Muralitharan claimed a maximum of 2 catches in a match.   

3. Aravinda De Silva

During his stint with the national team, Aravinda De Silva was regarded as an aggressive batter. The star batter was known for his exploits as a batter, especially in the 1996 ODI World Cup which Sri Lanka won. In Asia Cup, De Silva has a good record as a fielder. In 24 appearances, De Silva claimed 12 catches at a good rate of 0.5 catches per inning. Furthermore, De Silva played Asia Cup from 1984 to 2000, which is a very long time.   

2. Younis Khan

Arguably one of the best players from 2000s and 2010s was Younis Khan. Notably, Khan was known for his batting in Test cricket. In Asia Cup, Khan has a very good record as a fielder, more so as a catcher of the ball. In 14 appearances in the tournament, Khan claimed as many catches at a stunning rate of one catch per inning, which is the best for a fielder in the history of the Asia Cup. Moreover, it is worth mentioning that Khan claimed 3 catches in a match.   

1. Mahela Jayawardene

During his time with the national team, Mahela Jayawardene is regarded as one of the best fielders from Sri Lanka. In addition to this, the right-handed batter was known to be a good batter.  The former Sri Lankan captain has the most number of catches in the history of the Asia Cup. In 28 matches in the tournament, Jayawardene claimed 15 catches, at a rate of 0.535 catches per innings. Moreover, the maximum number of catches claimed by Jayewardene in a match was two.
