Three players who can retire after the 20-20 World Cup

The 20-20 World Cup is ongoing and the thrillers are already on as the tournament reached the Super 12 stage on October 22 with Australia and New Zealand facing off each other at Sydney.

There will also be many players who would be looking to end their careers on a high and retire after the T20I World Cup. Let’s look at three players who could say goodbye to the shortest format after the upcoming 20-20 World Cup in Australia.

Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravi Ashwin has been an innovator in the sport, not surprising as he holds an engineering degree to his name. The right-arm off-break bowler is one of the most street-smart cricketers out there. The Chennai-born single-handedly forced the cricketing world to accept Mankading as a legal and fair form of dismissal.

His days in the shortest format of the game however seem numbered as he has racked up only 5 wickets in the 9 matches that he has played this year. The Indian off-spinner made it to the Indian squad for the 20-20 World Cup 2022 and the purpose was solely to contain the run flow. However, Ashwin’s forte is Test cricket as the spinner has more than 400 wickets in the format and he could well bid goodbye to the shortest format after the conclusion of the showpiece event in Australia.

Aaron Finch

Australian captain Aaron Finch announced his retirement from the ODI format following a drop in form. The right-hand batter struggles with getting a good start. He often gets out at low scores in matches or either goes on to play big, nothing in between.

However, the Australian skipper looked in decent touch in the T20I series against India and in warm-up games of the ongoing 20-20 World Cup. Although one could agree that his captaincy exit in the ODI format eased a bit of pressure off him, Finch might call it a time in the T20I format after the ongoing 20-20 World Cup.

Dinesh Karthik has made a sensational comeback to the national side after remaining out for multiple years. The right-hand middle-order batter has recently become an important part of the team.

After proving his prowess with the bat in the T20I series against Australia and South Africa, Karthik made it to the 20-20 World Cup squad. With a strike rate of around 150 in T20Is this year, Karthik might retire from T20Is gracefully after playing the finisher role for team India.
