‘This is ridiculous’ – Star India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin responds to India’s chances of ending ‘trophy drought’

India lost to Sri Lanka in the 2014 T20 World Cup final before falling to Australia in the 2015 ODI World Cup semi-final.

Can India end the drought of trophies in multinational tournaments? This is the question that every Indian cricket fan is asking from cricket pundits, experts and the Indian team. The hopes are high, but the results are not in their favour. Since its Champions Trophy victory against England in 2013, the Indian team has constantly failed in big games.

Meanwhile, star India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took a jibe while addressing the same question on his YouTube channel. “Of course, the whole social media buzz will be about whether India will be able to get a trophy. We have been following this theme for so many years now, asking, ‘Can India end the trophy drought?’ If you ask me, this is ridiculous, guys. India is a strong team. Save for a few factors, India has a great chance this time around.” Ravichandran Ashwin further stated that India will start as favourites in the upcoming ODI World Cup.

Can India win the upcoming World Cup?

Notably, since 2013, India has constantly failed to hold its nerve in must-win games. India lost to Sri Lanka in the 2014 T20 World Cup final before falling to Australia in the 2015 ODI World Cup semi-final. The West Indies defeated India in the 2016 T20 World Cup semi-final. They then lost to arch-rivals Pakistan in the Champions Trophy final in 2017. Two years later, New Zealand defeated India in the ODI World Cup semi-finals.

Things became worse for India after they failed to get to the knockout stage of the T20 World Cup in 2021. In 2022, India advanced to the big event’s semi-finals, where they were defeated by England. Not only in white-ball cricket, India also failed in red-ball cricket. They lost two back-to-back finals in the World Test Championship cycle against New Zealand and Australia.

However, after 12 years, India will host the biggest event of the game. The team would like to dominate the game by making full use of home conditions. India will start their campaign against Australia in MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai on October 8.
