After much anticipation, the newest addition to the world cricketing leagues ‘The 6ixty’ got underway on Thursday. The opening match of the tournament was between Guyana Amazon Warriors and St Lucia Kings at Basseterre. The Kings’ captain Mark Deyal won the toss and invited the Warriors to bat first. The opening combination of Chandrapaul Hemraj and Shai Hope from the Warriors got the tournament off to an electrifying start scoring 41 runs in 2.4 overs.

After a blistering start, the Kings made an emphatic comeback into the game with four quick wickets as the Warriors were left struggling at 55/4 in 4.3 overs. Captain Shimron Hetmyer was seen struggling in the middle and could only manage to score 13 off 14 balls. A responsible knock of 36 off 24 balls by Odean Smith took the Warriors to a total of 111 for the loss of 5 wickets in their allotted 10 overs.

Coming out to bat in pursuit of their target, the Kings lost wickets in quick succession trying to keep up with the required run rate. They were reduced to the score of 55/5 after six overs. An inspired knock from Roshon Primus of 41 off just 23 balls took his team closer to the target. But lack of support from other batters led to them falling eight runs short of their target as the Warriors registered a win by seven runs in the opening encounter.

The 6ixty Match 2 Report

The second match of the day was between Jamaica Tallawahs and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. The Patriots’ captain Evin Lewis won the toss and elected to field first. The Tallawahs openers were sent back to the pavilion quickly for scores of 3 and 5, respectively. The innings was held together by explosive knocks from captain Rovman Powell, Fabian Allen and Raymon Reifer. Courtesy of these three special knocks the Tallawahs propelled their total to 139/6 after they were bowled out on the penultimate ball of the innings.

The Patriots’ chase never got going and succumbed to the immense scoreboard pressure. Dewald Brevis was the lone warrior in their innings, who scored 34 off 11 balls. Patriots were bundled out for 84 in 7.2 overs as Tallawahs emerged victorious comfortably winning the match by 55 runs.
