3) Netherlands vs England – 23/2 – Match number 40
England made a convincing total of 337 runs against Netherlands on the back of some amazing display with the bat. After contributing with his bat, Chris Woakes emerged and produced an outstanding new-ball spell. After Willey and he took the new ball, they immediately put the Netherlands onto the back foot.
In addition to taking a few wickets up front, the pair applied such much pressure with the dot balls. They made the third lowest score in the powerplay during the ODI World Cup 2023. It shows the kind of spell bowled by the English bowlers. After that the Netherlands had a significant amount of chasing to do when the spin started. As a result, Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali were given opportunities that ultimately failed to materialise. After five wickets, just fifteen were lost.
2) South Africa vs Australia – 18/2 – Semi-final 1
During their quarterfinal encounter versus Australia inside the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday, South Africa had the fourth-lowest score during an opening PowerPlay of an ODI World Cup.
With some outstanding ground fielding, the Australian bowlers kept the Proteas quiet as they finished the first ten overs at 18 for 2. Both of South Africa’s openers were dismissed during the spells of Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazelwood. In an ODI match, this also represents South Africa’s lowest performance in the opening ten overs. In September of this year, the Proteas’ previous record against the same opponent was 25/1.
1) Sri Lanka vs India – 14/6 – Match number 33
During their ODI World Cup 2023 encounter versus India, Sri Lanka recorded the lowest first PowerPlay total in World Cup history. They were left stunned by some amazing new ball display under the lights by the Indians.
With six wickets lost and only 14 runs scored in the first ten overs, the Lankans were thoroughly outclassed by Indian pacers Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Shami. In his opening over, Siraj claimed two wickets, while Bumrah took one. Shami wasn’t far behind, either, having scalped two during his opening over.
