Lucknow and Hyderabad locked horns at the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Mumbai. The KL Rahul-led side came into the game after beating Chennai in their previous match. On the other hand, Hyderabad were badly hammered by Rajasthan in their only game. Going by the trend of the tournament, the 2016 winners won the toss and elected to bowl first. The team had a great start as Washington Sundar took the wicket of Quinton de Kock (1).
Two overs later, Evin Lewis (1) was trapped lbw by Sundar. At 16/2, Manish Pandey (11) came and played some strokes before his innings was abruptly ended by Romario Shepherd with the scoresheet reading 27/3. At this stage, Deepak Hooda (51) joined his skipper Rahul and stitched a partnership of 87 runs. Hooda got his fifty in 31 balls including three fours and as many sixes before he became the second victim of Shepherd.
Three overs later, Rahul (68) was trapped lbw to T. Natarajan. Ayush Badoni played the cameo of 19 off 12 balls and the team ended with 169/7. For Hyderabad, Washington Sundar, Romario Shepherd, and T. Natarajan took two wickets each. In reply, the Men in Orange lost their openers, skipper Kane Williamson (16) and Abhishek Sharma (13) to pacer Avesh Khan with the score reading 38/2. Rahul Tripathi and Aiden Markram (12) stitched a partnership of 44 runs before the latter got out playing the inside-out shot against Krunal Pandya.
Tripathi scored 44 off 30 balls before his blistering innings was cut short by Krunal Pandya. At 95/4, Nicholas Pooran (34) and Washington Sundar stitched a partnership of 48 runs before the former got out to a full toss bowled by Avesh Khan. Abdul Samad followed the next ball as he was caught behind by de Kock. Khan was denied the hat-trick by Shepherd, who successfully defended the yorker. The Men in Mint Green went on to restrict the opposition to 157/9, winning the game by 12 runs
