Lockie Ferguson, Umran Malik, Anrich Nortje, Alzarri Joseph, Mohsin Khan, etc lit up the Indian T20 League 2022 with disconcerting pace bowling. They had bowled the top five fastest deliveries in the season. Khan bowled a delivery that was 151 kmph while Joseph was 0.8 kmph quicker than the former. Nortje, who played only a handful of games, managed to clock 152.6 during the season.
The biggest competitors in bowling the quickest deliveries of the season were Ferguson and Malik. They competed with each other neck to neck with one beating the other. However, with the drop in returns for the Kiwi, he was left out by the Gujarat team for some of the games during the league phase. At that time, he was leading the charts of the top-five fastest deliveries of the season.
On the other hand, Malik played all the games for Hyderabad, who finished eighth in the points table. The Jammu and Kashmir went ahead of his New Zealand counterpart after clocking 157 kmph in one of the games. After this, he was leading the charts as Ferguson wasn’t getting to play a game. In fact, he didn’t even play the Qualifier 1 game against Rajasthan.
As they won the game and qualified for the final, it was expected that he won’t be playing the final against the same opponents. However, the Gujarat team rested Joseph and brought in Ferguson for such high octane game. The tearaway pacer came into bowl in the fifth over of the first innings. During the over, he clocked high 140s and early 150’s.
However, the twist in the tale was the last ball of the over. Jos Buttler, the leading run-getter was on strike. The right-arm pacer bowled a yorker outside the off-stump at a speed of 157.3 kmph. With this, he was assured of getting the fastest delivery of the season after the game ended. His side went on to lift the title beating the 2008 winners by seven wickets.
