India chief selector Chetan Sharma has said that Sanju Samson is in their scheme of things for the T20 World Cup 2022 that will be played in Australia later this year. Samson has been included in India’s 18-member squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka starting February 24. The Kerala cricketer last donned the India jersey in the shortest format during the away series against the island nation last July.
Having already been retained by Rajasthan as their captain for Indian T20 League 2022, the wicketkeeper batter would be looking forward to making the most of his opportunities in the Sri Lanka series and thereby, reviving his T20I career with a cut-throat competition for the keeper’s slot.
“Sanju is in our scheme of things. Most importantly we have to see which is a cricketer who will be useful on Australian wickets. He is definitely in our scheme of things (for the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year, said Chetan Sharma during a virtual press conference recently.
Even though Sanju Samson had made his T20I debut for India way back in 2015, he has only managed to make 10 appearances, scoring 117 runs at an average of 11.70. He has been roped in for the upcoming series as a second-choice wicketkeeper along with Ishan Kishan as regular stumper as Rishabh Pant has been rested.
Nonetheless, Pant will be back in action in the two-match Test series. The first game would be played at Lucknow’s Ekana Cricket Stadium whereas, the final two matches would be contested at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on February 26 and 27 respectively
