The Mumbai-based franchise in the Indian T20 League suffered another setback as Australian fast bowler Jhye Richardson is unlikely to play for them in the upcoming 16th season due to a hamstring injury and his chances of recovering from injury before the cash-rich league are not looking good. Richardson was bought by the Mumbai franchise in the auction held in December 2022 for INR 1.50 crores.

Richardson is battling with a hamstring injury since the recently concluded Big Bash League (BBL). He was out of the field due to an injury in BBL. Richardson played for his cricket club Fremantle last Saturday after being out of the field for two whole months due to injury but was able to bowl only four overs in a 50-over match.

He felt uncomfortable while bowling and then he immediately reached for the scan. After the scans, his hamstring injury came to the fore once again in the medical examination and he was advised to rest for a few weeks.

Richardson was part of the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League but he couldn’t play the final due to a hamstring injury. However, Perth still won the title for the fifth time. He could not even play in Australia’s domestic tournaments like Marsh Cup and Sheffield Shield. Despite this, he was selected in the ODI squad for the tour of India in view of his recovery, but now Nathan Ellis has replaced him in the Australian squad.

Richardson made his international debut in the year 2017, but after that, he was out of the Australian team for a long time due to a shoulder injury in 2019. The 26-year-old player has played a total of 36 matches for Australia in all three formats so far and picked up a total of 57 wickets.

Meanwhile, it will be difficult for Mumbai as their premium bowler Jasprit Bumrah is already ruled out of the tournament due to a back injury and has flown to New Zealand for surgery. However, the five-time champions will have Jofra Archer’s service in the upcoming season.

Here’s how fans reacted to Jhye Richardson’s news:
