In the final ODI of the three-match series, Australia thrashed India by 21 runs to win the series by 2-1. They defeated India at their home after four years and became the first team to do so. This series loss came after India won the first game in Mumbai and lost the second one in Vishakhapatnam.
In the series decider at MA. Chidambaram Stadium, Australia won the toss and opted to bat first. Despite some quick wickets, the Aussies managed to put up a competitive total of 269 runs in 49 overs. Opener Mitchell Marsh became the top scorer for the visitors as he hammered 47 runs off 47 balls with the help of eight boundaries and one maximum. He added 68 runs for the first wicket with Travis Head who scored 33 runs off 31 balls.
For India spinner, Kuldeep Yadav and allrounder Hardik Pandya proved to be the go-to bowlers. Both Hardik and Kuldeep clinched three wickets each and stopped the Aussies to put up a mammoth total. Apart from them Axar Patel and Mohammed Siraj also clinched two wickets each to bundle up Australia for 269 runs.
India’s casual batting costed series
Chasing 270 was never going to be an easy task on the spin-friendly Chepauk ground. Although, Skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill started well as they added 65 runs for the first wicket. Rohit hammered 30 runs off just 17 balls while Gill scored 37 runs off 49 balls. Rohit was dismissed by Sean Abbott while Adam Zampa removed dangerous Gill before he could convert his start into a big one.
After two quick wickets star batter Virat Kohli along with KL Rahul added 69 runs for the third wicket and tried to stable the run chase. Zampa once again came to rescue the visitors as he dismissed Rahul for 32 runs off 50 balls. Meanwhile, Kohli hammered his 65th half-century before getting trapped by Ashton Agar.
For Australia Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar had been a game changer as they clinched six crucial wickets together. Zampa took four wickets while Agar dismissed two Indian batters. Agar dismissed Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav on two consecutive balls as Surya registered his third golden duck in the series. Meanwhile, fans react to India’s bizarre series loss as they put their reactions through memes.
