The second Test of the Ashes 2023 is now in an interesting position once again as Australia needs six wickets to win the game. On the other hand, hosts England need 257 runs to level the series. Ben Duckett, along with skipper Ben Stokes, are on the crease as they look to sail England through the trouble. Duckett scored a brilliant half-century when all batters were struggling.
However, a controversy before the stumps on Day 4 left fans split on social media. Minutes before the end of the fourth day of play in the second Test between England and Australia at Lord’s, Duckett offered a ramp shot to cope with a short delivery from Cameron Green, and the ball went to fine leg, where Mitchell Starc appeared to complete a good catch.
However, the ball scraped the turf as Starc was sliding after the catch, and MCC claims that the fielder was not in control of his movements, so the claim was denied. Australia, on the other hand, was not pleased with the decision. Aussie skipper Pat Cummins questioned the on-field umpire about why his team was denied a fifth England wicket.
“That’s out”, says Glenn McGrath over the controversial decision
Speaking about the issue, former Australia skipper Glenn McGrath slammed umpires. He said that if England had taken the catch, it would have been out. “I’m sorry, that is the biggest load of rubbish I have ever seen,” he said. He has that ball under control. That ball is under control. I’m sorry; I’ve seen everything this game has to offer. If that is not out, then every other catch that’s ever been taken should be out. That is a disgrace. I’ve seen everything now. I cannot believe that. If that ball is not under control, that is ridiculous. He’s got that well under control in two hands. I have seen everything now.”
“If that’s England taking that catch, that’s out. That’s ridiculous. I cannot believe that. That is a regulation catch. If I’m bowling, I’m not happy. The ground had no assistance in helping him catch that ball. He’s having a go at Duckett. I’d be having a go at everyone if I were Mitchell Starc. That’s basically saying Mitchell Starc is cheating. And he did not cheat; he caught that comfortably. If you catch it in your hand, you have control”, he further added.
Here is how fans reacted to the catch taken by Mitchell Starc:

It is correct decision the ball is not supposed to touch ground and catch is only completed when player stands up without grounding the ball

Aussies are known for this. They are professional cheaters

Not sure but it seems from previous some such controversial catches, if fingers are underneath the ball and ball hits the ground, it is considered as a fair catch, and if the fingers are over the ball, then not out ?

Correct decision has been made. The ball shouldn’t be grounded when your body is in motion. If a fielder crosses the boundary after catching the ball with body still in motion then it is given as a six not a catch. So it’s a not out.

Thats why its hard to get new fans to game cricket is so complicated even the experienced fans are divided if its a legit catch or not then forget about new fans

For the first time ever in the history of cricket, i feel such a grassed catch has not been given in australia favour.. Generally as soon as aussies take a grassed catch, by their over joyed reaction no umpire ever checks the catch.. This is the 1st time.. ? Superb

Australia and cheating is two same thing. That can't be separated.
