Neeraj Chopra, the Golden boy of India, has made history again after becoming only the second Indian to win a medal at the World Athletics Championship. With a throw of 88.13m, the Indian Olympic medallist was able to achieve the second spot in the finals of the World Athletics Championship Javelin throw.
Grenada’s Anderson Peters won the gold medal with the best throw of 90.46m. His match-winning throw came in his sixth attempt. With this win, Peters has won two back-to-back gold medals in the World Athletics Championship and has defended his title from the last event.
Talking of Chopra’s final showing, he started off with a foul throw on his first attempt. His best throw came in his fourth attempt when he breached 88.13 m to get to the second. He could not improve on his throw as his fifth and sixth attempts were foul throws. Earlier, Chopra has topped the Group A qualification round with his first throw itself, sending his spear to 88.39m. Peters with a throw of 89.91m topped Group B.
Other Indian javelin thrower Rohit Yadav also qualified for the finals with an 11th-best throw. He, however, could only manage to finish 10th with a best throw of 78.72 m. Earlier, he had thrown 80.42m in the qualification.
The 21-year-old Yadav had recorded a personal and season’s best throw of 82.54m and won silver at the National Interstate Championship last month.
With this silver win, Neeraj Chopra becomes only the second Indian to win a medal at the World Athletics Championship. Earlier, long jumper Anju Bobby George was the only Indian to win a medal at the World Athletics Championship when she won bronze at the 2003 event.
The whole of the country came together to congratulate the Javelin star after his silver win. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a tweet said, “A great accomplishment by one of our most distinguished athletes! Congratulations to Neeraj Chopra on winning a historic Silver medal at the World Championship. This is a special moment for Indian sports. Best wishes to Neeraj for his upcoming endeavours.”
