Upscaling tech like Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR could be called one of the best uses of artificial intelligence in the gaming industry. The tech enables better performance for older hardware, giving them a boost in video game frame rates and resolution.
Microsoft is now reportedly utilizing a similar tech for Windows itself. This tech will also enable better resolution and frame rates using AI without the use of GPU. Integrated upscale and frame generation tech might let older cards reach playable frame in modern games
How is it beneficial?
The AI upscaling does not necessarily mean that games will run without GPUs. Rather, this will help Windows to assist GPUs and games to output more frames if DLSS and FSR do not work for you.
Updates to Nvidia’s DLSS are hardware-bound. A great example is DLSS 3 which is limited to RTX 40 series GPU. People with 30 series can only use DLSS 2 which does not have AI frame generation.
The Upscaling in Windows might assist in these situations and might help even older cards to have a little more performance. Even people who are using a GTX series card or older AMD card may be able to use upscale and frame generation technology.
When is it coming?
The version 24H2 update for Windows 11 coming sometime in the latter half of 2024 will reportedly feature this new tech. The update will include Automatic Super Resolution (ASR). However, there are no solid dates or announcements.
Another thing to note is that the tech might make use of NPU silicon on processors. Windows 11 already created a controversy of losing support for older processors. If the new upscaling tech requires the latest processors, it may not go very well for Microsoft.
