As he sees it as the best preparation for the Twenty-20 World Cup, which takes place in the West Indies as well as the USA in June 2024, Mitchell Starc will be setting himself in position for an opportunity to return to the IPL the following year.

If signed by a team, Starc would play in the event for the first time since 2015 where he was with Royal Challengers Bangalore, and played in 27 games over the course of two seasons.  He was acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018 but withdrew due to injury. On other times, he thought about returning but decided to spend time at home in the midst of a busy multi-format itinerary for Australia.

“Amongst other things, it’s a great lead-up to the T20 World Cup” : Mitchell Starc

The left-arm seamer spoke to Willow Cricket Talk Podcast about his potential return to the IPL. He said, “Look it’s been eight years. I’m definitely going back in [next] year. Amongst other things, it’s a great lead-up to the T20 World Cup.”

The fast bowler added that the workload is less next year so he might be able to put his name and forward and prepare himself for the World Cup as well. He added, “So a good opportunity to see if anyone’s interested in the IPL, then lead into the T20 World Cup. And it’s somewhat of a quiet winter next year…in comparison to this winter, so I think a perfect opportunity to put my name in.”

Starc has previously avoided the IPL in order to focus entirely on Test cricket, which is one of the main reasons he did so. He doesn’t set a time limit for how long his career will go, but he hopes to make 100 appearances in the format. Only fast bowler Glenn McGrath has accomplished the feat for Australia. He has played in 82 Tests as of right now, and if he participates in all of Australia’s remaining matches under the Future Tours Programme, his 100th match would occur during the Ashes in 2025–2026.
