India and Gujarat Titans opening batter Shubman Gill is touted as the next Virat Kohli in international cricket. The former rose through after becoming the U19 World Cup winner in 2018. After the tournament, he played domestic cricket for Punjab and did well across formats. This earned him a call and made his debut in the 2020-21 BGT series in Australia.
Early this year, the right-hander, Gill got an opportunity to open the innings in ODI cricket on regular basis. In the game he played from January to March this year, the Punjab player has done well. Meanwhile, former India head coach, Ravi Shastri was asked who can break the record of Kohli’s 973 runs in an IPL season. In reply, the 1983 World Cup winner said that Shubman might do it in the future.
“He (Gill) has to be an opening batsman, because only then will he get many opportunities to score runs. I feel, it is Subhman Gill because he is in good form and also because he plays top of the order. So he will get good number of opportunities to score runs.
If Shubman Gill can score 80-100 consecutively, he might break the record: Ravi Shastri
The former India all-rounder added that Gill needs to score 80 to 100 runs consistently for three to four innings. The former further added breaking Virat’s record will be difficult but an opening batter gets two extra games.
“The pitches are good, so if he can score 80-100 runs consecutively in two or three innings, then at that point of time only he will already have 300-400 runs.
“According to me, it is very difficult to break the record, because 900 plus runs is huge but one thing is opening batsmen will get two extra matches and two extra innings, so opening batsmen can only break this record if it is possible,” Shastri said in a conversation with Star Sports.
