After losing Mitch Marsh in the first over, Australia established a strong partnership with the help of David Warner and Steve Smith in the first ODI of their series against India. The southpaw got a fifty with the aid of a Shreyas Iyer drop catch. He ultimately gave away his wicket after finding a fielder in the deep off Ravindra Jadeja. Smith also got a good start, but Mohammed Shami’s nip-backer proved to be too effective for him.
Unfortunately, Marnus Labuschagne was caught behind the wickets after a ball swerved off KL Rahul’s pads. As India continued to come back, everyone in the Australian top order made starts but was unable to build on them.
Josh Inglis gave a strong 45, but he was defeated by an excellent Bumrah slower ball. At the very end, Shami came back and took three wickets, finishing with a fifer. Australia set a mediocre total of 276 on a flat Mohali pitch with a little bit of assistance for spinners.
India chased down Australia’s total with ease
A straightforward chase given that the pitch flattened out during the second inning and the batting did improve. Shubman Gill, elegant as always, used some eye-catching strokeplay to make the best possible use of the powerplay. Ruturaj Gaikwad, who spent some time getting going but picked up speed once he did, gave him all the assistance he needed.
After both openers reached fifty runs, Adam Zampa delivered three wickets in a row by dismissing Gill, Rutu, and Iyer as Iyer ended up getting run out. The situation then became a little tense as Ishan Kishan tried to uppercut, but Suryakumar Yadav as well as KL Rahul calmed things down.
In particular, the Mumbai Indians batter displayed excellent patience by controlling his aggressive tendencies and making several classic shots to help India go close to crossing the finish line. Rahul was confident at the other end because he produced a captain’s knock, got a fifty, and scored the deciding runs having 8 balls to spare, but he was unable to complete the task.
