Cricket is a game in which players need to be aware of their surroundings. This basic is always taught when a player starts playing in the academies and clubs. However, it seems that Jonny Bairstow managed to miss the trick in the ongoing Day Five of the second Test of Ashes 2023. On the last ball of the 52nd over, Australia all-rounder Cameron Green bowled a bouncer to the Yorkshire man.
The latter ducked the ball and started to take off as the strike was supposed to change for the next over. However, little did he know that the umpires were yet to call the over. On the other hand, Carey, who watches Bairstow leaving the crease, executed an underarm throw. The ball hit the stumps and the third umpire gave it out. The England fans weren’t happy with the dismissal and started booing the visitors.

This is how Twitter reacted
Great presence of mind from Alex Carey. Those believing that it wasn't in the greatest spirits, go back to school

Watch it again. Both umpires had turned away and didn’t see it. The over was complete.

Carey didn’t do anything wrong, but I just don’t like it. Same as last nights decision – maybe technically correct but bad for the game imo.#Ashes2023

After Bairstow’s wicket, the game was shifted heavily towards the Aussies as they had 178 runs in the bag and four wickets to take. However, English skipper Ben Stokes counter-attacked Australia’s bowling and Stuart Broad has been a spectator at the other end. Both put together 50 runs in the last five overs before Lunch break was taken.
Stokes has been more dominant in the partnership as he scored 46 off 21 balls. In the 56th over, the two-time World Cup winner scored two fours and three sixes to reach his hundred. At the time of writing, he is batting on 108 while Broad has scored one. The team needs 128 runs in the last two sessions. More importantly, they have only four wickets left. In the second last over before Lunch, Stokes was dropped by Mitchell Starc. Four years back, Stokes won the famous Headingley Test for England as they chased down 350-odd with one wicket left.
The team will be hoping for the same as it would mean that the Ashes remain alive for a while.
