Johnson Charles writes history as he become leading run-scorer of Caribbean Premier League

Johnson Charles scored 24 against Jamaica Tallawahs in his side’s defeat to the reigning champions

Caribbean Premier League 2023

Johnson Charles might not have had the strongest international career, but he loves to make every CPL T20 match count. Like Pollard, he has participated in every season between 2013 and 2023 and has played for nearly every CPL franchise, notably Antigua, Trinidad & Tobago, St. Lucia, Barbados, and Jamaica.

He has scored 2,671 runs across 99 games overall, and in yesterday’s match, he performed well. In his CPL career, he has scored 17 fifty runs and once came just short of a century with a score of 94*. He overtook the West Indies batter Lendl Simmons to become the Caribbean Premier League top run-getter. The opener was able to achieve this significant milestone in the opening game of the Caribbean Premier League 2023 between Saint Lucia Kings and Jamaica Tallawahs.

Jamaica Tallawahs grab the win in the season opener

The Tallawahs had a solid batting effort, scoring 187 runs in just 20 overs. With an impressive 81 runs from 53 balls, comprising 9 fours as well as 3 sixes, Brandon King seized the show. His impressive performance served as the catalyst for JAM’s innings. Imad Wasim scored 19 runs, Raymon Reifer scored 16 runs, and Kirk McKenzie scored 20 runs. The Tallawahs were able to compile a respectable total despite a late spate of wickets.

The Lucia Kings faced a difficult score in front of them and they needed something miraculous to win the game for their side. With a score of remarkable 53 runs off only 31 balls, including 4 fours and 3 sixes, Roston Chase continued to show off his all-around mastery.

However, wickets at critical junctures slowed their progress. Roshon Primus, Johnson Charles, and Sean Williams all made significant contributions, however, the batting order fell slightly short of the mark. Imad Wasim’s three-wicket haul helped the Tallawahs’ bowlers present a cohesive front. Chris Green and Salman Irshad each took two wickets, and Mohammad Amir bowled efficiently despite not getting a wicket.
